Ireland, an island off the coast of England and Wales, is home to over 7 million people; its geography, comprising mainly of low-lying mountains with rivers extending inland, allows for the growth of different vegetation despite its climate. Immigration into Ireland has been on the rise in recent years as more people come to know of the hospitality and innovation that is Ireland, with an economy with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of over 500 billion and a poverty line of under 13.1%. Migrating to Ireland as a Nigerian might be a little tricky as their immigration laws have become much stricter in 2024, but obtaining a visa and resident permit should be a breeze if you follow the correct procedure.
Before applying for a visa, it is advised to know the kind of visas available:
- You would want to apply for an Ireland Tourist Visa or a Short Stay ‘C’ if you plan a short stay of less than 90 days. These visas are for people traveling for recreational purposes.
- Ireland Business Visa is for people traveling to Ireland for business purposes. This visa allows you to stay in Ireland for up to 90 days.
- Ireland Long-Stay Visa is for people wishing to work, study, or live with a family member in Ireland for over 90 days.
If you’re planning to stay in Ireland for under 90 days, below are the documents required to start your application:
- A valid passport
- Two color passport photographs
- A completed visa application form
- Proof of funds
- Application letter detailing the purpose of your visit
- Proof of ties to home country
- Proof of accommodation, this includes evidence of your host address
- Birth certificate
- Marriage certificate ( if applicable)
- An up-to-date bank statement
If you plan on migrating permanently, you must book an appointment at any Irish embassy near you. Your appointment with the immigration officer will determine whether your application will be accepted. Processing time differs based on the type of visa you’re applying for. The documents required to apply for a Long-Stay Visa are the same as those mentioned above. However, if you plan to retire in Ireland, you would be asked to show the following:
- Financial documentation showing all income and monthly spending
- Application for a D-Reside Visa
Costs and Fees
A visa fee, residence permit fee, and fee for biometric information would be collected during the application process. Single-entry visa fees cost £60, while multi-entry visa fees cost £100; additional fees may be required depending on the type of visa you’re applying for.
