The Canadian citizenship ceremony is the final step in becoming a citizen of Canada. Applicants who applied for permanent residence and were successful would take the oath-swearing ceremony primarily via video call in a final step towards gaining citizenship.
People who have to take the Oath
People older than 14 must attend the ceremony and take the Oath. When a child under 14 is also granted citizenship, they may participate in the ceremony but are not expected to take the Oath. Instead, their parent would be given a certificate of citizenship on their behalf.

Emails are sent 1 to 2 weeks in advance to the ceremony participants; if you have yet to see yours, please check your junk/spam folder.
If you have already applied but have yet to get a response, please be patient, as processing time might be the issue. If you are between 18 and 54 years old when you applied, you must pass the citizenship test. You can check your application status by logging in to the IRRC website and checking under the “Citizenship ceremony” section.
Things to bring to the ceremony
- Your ceremony notice
- a signed copy of the permission release and consent form (included with the notice)
- a permanent residence card or Confirmation of permanent residence
- Record of landing (if you were a permanent residence before June 2022)
- Two pieces of a personal ID (one of them must have your photograph and signature)
- all your passports and travel documents listed on your application form
- optional: a holy book of your choice if you choose to swear on one during the ceremony
What happens during the ceremony
During the ceremony, you will take the Oath of citizenship, get your citizenship certificate, sign the Oath of citizenship form, and sign the national anthem.
